Glenn Carle served as an operations officer in the CIA for 23 years, retiring from the Agency in March 2007. In his last assignment he served as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Transnational Threats on the National Intelligence Council. In this capacity he was responsible for the US intelligence community’s most senior strategic assessments of terrorist threats.

Now a rare glimpse inside the shadowy world inside the CIA’s interrogation unit. A 23 year veteran of the agency Glenn Carle has just published a personal account of some of the CIA’s most disturbing investigation methods. It’s not surprising his former employers are not happy about this book. It’s been a 12 month battle to get it published. Aaron Lewis caught up with Glenn Carle in Washington just before he left for Australia to make his appearance at this week’s Sydney Writers’ Festival.

This month marked the ten year anniversary of Guantanamo Bay and three years since President Obama said he would close down the controversial prison. It is no secret that Gitmo has had some bad PR, but still the prisons inter-workings are still very secretive. Glenn Carle served 23 years in the Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency, working in a number of overseas posts on four continents and in Washington, D.C. Carle has worked on terrorism issues at various times since the mid-1980s. He has worked extensively on Balkan, Central American, and European political, security, and economic issues.
